Bench Sinks
Putting in a new sink or repairing the old one:
- Sink installation and repairs for renovations and worn-out bowls
A kitchen and a laundry between them hold half the taps in a family home. Here is what a licensed plumber covers in both rooms, from the bench sink to the machine hose.
If we're late, $100 comes off your bill

As a kitchen plumber, Upper Kedron work keeps us under benches and behind tubs more than anywhere else. These two rooms fail differently from the bathroom, because a drip lands inside a cabinet and a hose lets go behind a machine.
For plumbing anywhere else around the property, our Upper Kedron home page sets out the full range, room by room.

Kitchen and laundry plumbing means the supply lines, the waste lines, the traps and the connection points at your bench sink, dishwasher, washing machine and laundry tub. On the kitchen side that covers the mixer at the bench and the machine below it. On the laundry side that covers the tub or trough, the wall taps filling the washer and the waste taking the water away.
Under a standard bench sink, a hot and a cold line feed the mixer, and each supply carries an isolation point. The waste side runs from the basket waste through the trap into the waste pipe.
Every fixture in the house drains through a trap of its own, and the water seal in that bend is what stops sewer gas rising into the room. Past the traps, all of it joins the buried private sanitary drain, the in-ground line carrying your fixtures to the sewer connection.
One sanitary drain serves the whole dwelling, so a sink and a toilet discharge into the same line on the way out. That is worth knowing before a renovation plan starts shifting fixtures along the bench.

Here is where to find each shut-off in these two rooms, so one fixture closes without taking the property down with it:
an isolation valve on each supply line, so the mixer comes apart while water stays on everywhere else.
a tap on the wall, which also feeds most washing machine hoses.
a valve or wall tap on the supply, so either machine disconnects without touching the other.
the stop tap on the water meter, which shuts the whole property off by turning clockwise. Check first that nothing, such as the hot water system, needs the supply while closed.
Weeping isolation valves and loose hose connections are the standard calls on the newer streets here, because several builders worked side by side and tapware differs from street to street. We replace those as a quick minor-work job.

Queensland hands almost all of this work to a licensed plumber. The QBCC's unregulated list is short, and in these rooms it covers two jobs only: replacing a tap's jumper valve or washer, and swapping a domestic water filter cartridge. Whoever does either still needs the right knowledge and skill, and the finished work must meet the standards.
Everything else falls into two licensed categories:
repairing or replacing a fixture or fitting is minor work. A QBCC licensee does the job, with no permit and no form involved.
installing or relocating a fixture is notifiable work, which also sits with a licensed plumber.
The washer and the filter cartridge sit outside the rules. The moment a trap, a waste line or an appliance connection comes into play, the work is licensed territory.

Notifiable work is plumbing in a home that already stands: no council permit applies and no inspection is required, but the QBCC is told once the licensed plumber finishes. The Form 4 goes in within 10 business days of wrapping up.
Kitchen renovations sit squarely in that category. Relocating a sink along the bench, or shifting the trough to another wall, makes the job notifiable from the moment the plan moves anything.
we hand the Form 4 over with the invoice, and the QBCC can send one if yours never arrives.
some unit renovations need council approval, and adding a fixture to a building on a combined drain is permit work. Raise that with us before the plan is final.
Four jobs in these rooms each get a page of their own, with the parts and the process spelled out:

Putting in a new sink or repairing the old one:

Connecting a new or replacement machine:

Filtered water at the bench:

The trough, the wall taps and the machine hose:
Plenty of the machines and mixers we connect come home from the Ferny Grove Shopping Village and station just outside the suburb, so book the connection for delivery day. We hook up new tubs and dishwashers for homes right across the suburb, from the Ellendale streets through to the older blocks along Taunton Circuit and Kirralee Crescent.

Yes, because every fixture in the house drains through its own trap before joining one buried line. That private sanitary drain carries the building's fixtures out to the sewer connection, sink and toilet alike.
Yes, you do. Moving a fixture in a home that already stands is notifiable work. A licensed plumber does the job and lodges a Form 4 with the QBCC inside 10 business days of finishing.
At a joint or a connection. The usual spots are the trap and waste joints, the tap base, the supply connections and the appliance hoses. Our sink, laundry and flexi hose pages carry the fine detail.
A pipe serving just one lot, sitting inside that lot's boundaries and sharing no wall, floor or ceiling with another lot, belongs to the lot owner. A pipe supplying more than one lot belongs to the body corporate.
The price is set by a fixed quote once we have seen the job. What drives it is whether fixtures stay put or move, whether the plan needs new water or waste points, how reachable the pipework is, and the fittings used.
